Brief Information John Glenn was an American aviator, engineer, astronaut, and politician. He was the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962 aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft. Glenn later served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio for 24 years and, at age 77, became the oldest person to fly in space in 1998.
